Aspiring to be the Singapore of the Middle East, the King Abdullah Economic City is endorsed by the late King Abdullah himself. It is located 100km from Jeddah and on the eastern bank of the Red Sea. The desert setting, with nothing but sand and camels, offers a blank slate to design something iconic. Correspondingly, the roads are shaped as smooth curves, and an axial line traverses from north to south, helping to draw a highly symmetrical visual corridor in the style of a grand design. Into this is integrated elements linked to sustainability and opportunities for economic development, such as a sizeable seaport and a central business district by a large, natural lagoon. The end goal is to make the city a suitable place to live, work and play.
